When Jim Adam formed Brussels British Rugby Club in September 1968 he would not have anticipated returning from Florida 40 years later to celebrate what has become a very unique expat Rugby Club. Over 300 people got together on 26-28 September 2008, of which nearly half came from abroad: United Kingdom (80), United States (14), Netherlands (7), France (5), Ireland (5), Canada (4), Czech Republic (4), Spain (3), South Africa (2), Peru (2), South Korea (2), Japan (1), Hong Kong (1), Switzerland (1).

The weekend started with a golf tournament on the Friday morning at La Tournette for 36 players, followed by 200 attending a reception that evening at the Hotel de Ville, kindly hosted by Freddy Thielemans, Mayor of Brussels and himself a former BBRFC player.

We were blessed with fantastic weather over the whole weekend, and Saturday afternoon at Tervuren saw the Ladies beat Gent; a touch rugby game in which one the club founders Ray Bishop, now aged 73 played; finally there was a very competitive Past v Present mens match, with the Present running out victors 40-60.

On Saturday evening a Black Tie Gala Dinner & Dance was held at the Concert Noble, which saw dancing and singing continuing until 5:30 Sunday morning, with excellent catering from “Chef Chez Soi”.

Recently renamed Brussels Barbarians (but still BBRFC) nearly 1000 men and women have played for the club coming from over 45 different nations. It is amazing how many people have made life long friends and indeed many marriages have started from those associated with BBRFC in their 20-30s, an influential time in many peoples lives. A 2009 Charity calendar has been produced depicting photos through the clubs history, proceeds going to Down’s Syndrome associations here in Belgium and the UK.

We received several e-mails from former members who couldn't attend and Reuben Levermore kindly collated these into a single document, which also contains text first published in the 30th anniversary brochure.

An e-mail from Peter Berring eloquently summarised the weekend:

.

“ What a weekend!  I had looked forward to the 40th but the days were even better than I had imagined they would be.  BBRFC is a very special Club and this was highlighted in the past three days.  I would just like to thank those who made the Weekend the fantastic event it was!     I thoroughly enjoyed the celebrations, meeting so many old friends, running out again (albeit somewhat slower than in the past!), competing on the Golf course and having the opportunity to show Maureen just why BBRFC holds such a high place! A series of events like the ones we experienced does not happen without an enormous effort. On top of this everything went like clockwork across the three days. From arriving at the hotel to meeting the Mayor!  The Organising Committee deserve our immense gratitude for a brilliant celebration! Even the weather was excellent.  Many thanks again for a fantastic time. Looking forward to the 50th already!  “
